A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City indicted Christian Salinas-Santiago, a 30-year-old from Los Angeles, California, on May 6 for allegedly trafficking heroin into Utah.

The indictment follows an investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations and the Salt Lake Police Department. Authorities say this case is part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and related crimes through interagency collaboration. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah enforces federal laws to protect residents and promote community safety, according to the official website.

According to court documents, Homeland Security Investigations began looking into a Mexico-based narcotics source in January. An undercover agent communicated with a trafficker about shipments coming to Utah. On April 21, Salinas-Santiago allegedly delivered about one kilogram of heroin to an undercover agent in Midvale before being arrested during a traffic stop. The substance tested positive as heroin and weighed approximately 1.03 kilograms.

Salinas-Santiago faces charges of distribution of heroin. His initial appearance is scheduled for May 7 at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City before a U.S. Magistrate Judge.

First Assistant United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak announced the indictment and said that Assistant United States Attorney Vernon Stejskal will prosecute the case.

This prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159, which aims to eliminate criminal cartels and transnational criminal organizations operating within the United States and abroad. The task force includes agents from several agencies with prosecutions led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah operates under the Department of Justice with about 85 employees—including around 45 assistant attorneys—and maintains offices in Salt Lake City and St. George while covering all counties across Utah, according to the official website.
