A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned indictments on April 8 against five individuals, including four Mexican nationals and one U.S. citizen, for alleged drug trafficking offenses after authorities seized about 52 pounds of narcotics during operations last month.
The indictments are part of ongoing efforts by federal law enforcement to address illegal drug distribution and related criminal activity in the region. The cases stem from coordinated investigations involving multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local police departments.
According to court documents, Jesus Cecilio Ceballos-Mendoza and Jesus Ivan Meza-Lopez were charged following a controlled purchase operation that led to the seizure of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl from their vehicle. Both men face charges related to possession with intent to distribute these substances. Their initial court appearance is scheduled for April 9 at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse.
Luis Angel Cervantes Salinas was charged after agents found fentanyl and a shotgun during a search at his residence in Salt Lake County. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. His first court appearance is set for April 16.
Juan Carlos Gonzalez Soto was arrested after law enforcement discovered cocaine and cash during searches at his home and vehicle in West Valley City. He faces charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, with an initial hearing also scheduled for April 9.
Jose Francisco Aguilar Lozano was stopped on Interstate 80 near Park City while driving a tractor truck containing over eight kilograms of fentanyl packaged in bundles. He has been charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl; his jury trial is set for June 12.
First Assistant United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak announced the indictments. The Organized Crime Section within the U.S. Attorney’s Office will prosecute these cases as part of Operation Take Back America—a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling transnational criminal organizations.
These prosecutions fall under the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159: Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The task force coordinates interagency efforts targeting cartels, gangs, human smuggling rings, and other criminal enterprises affecting communities across the country.
Officials emphasized that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
