An indictment was unsealed in Salt Lake City after Jose Cesar Paredes-Davila, a 33-year-old Mexican national living in Utah, appeared in federal court on charges related to drug trafficking. Paredes-Davila is accused of possessing and distributing fentanyl and methamphetamine while residing in the United States illegally on an expired visa.

Court documents state that the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force (UCMC) began investigating Paredes-Davila in January 2026 following information that he was distributing significant amounts of narcotics. On January 15, 2026, law enforcement executed a search warrant on a vehicle believed to be used by Paredes-Davila for drug trafficking. Officers seized 2,196 grams of field-tested positive fentanyl—estimated to be about 21,000 pills—and approximately 615 grams of field-tested methamphetamine. Authorities also found $9,124 in cash and $2,000 in Western Union money orders.

Investigators allege that Paredes-Davila used vacation rentals to receive controlled substances by mail. A United States Postal Investigator checked a rental property address associated with him and discovered a parcel addressed to “Cesar Paredes” en route to Salt Lake City. After obtaining and executing a search warrant at this location, agents seized an additional 3,562 grams of field-tested positive methamphetamine.

Paredes-Davila faces charges including possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and attempted possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. His jury trial is scheduled for April 3, 2026, at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse.

United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak for the District of Utah announced the indictment. The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force and the United States Postal Inspection Service.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman is prosecuting the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide Department of Justice initiative focused on addressing illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations.

“An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
