Austin Matthew Otto, a 25-year-old resident of Orem, Utah, has been sentenced to eight years in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release. The sentencing comes after Otto admitted to producing sexually explicit images of two minors and uploading child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to his Google Photos account. Law enforcement discovered 400 images and 19 videos of CSAM on his electronic devices.

U.S. District Court Judge Howard C. Nielson, Jr., delivered the sentence after Otto’s guilty plea on June 4, 2024. In addition to the prison term, Otto was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to each victim.

Court documents reveal that in May 2021, a Google report led the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to identify Otto as having uploaded CSAM. Subsequent investigations traced IP addresses back to him, resulting in his arrest. A search warrant led authorities to seize numerous images and videos of CSAM from his possessions along with child-sized underwear. Forensic analysis uncovered further evidence on his digital devices.

The Orem Police Department conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant United States Attorney Carol A. Dain prosecuted it under Project Safe Childhood—a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local agencies.
